Completely agree with you about “ahead of its time” (or the inverse, criticizing something as dated). For me, part of the joy of any artwork, etc. is the imaginative travel to the time and place it came from.
I'm sure that you've been in a museum and seen a painting or a sculpture or some artifact and really had your imagination catalyzed -- imagined what that world might have been like. That's an important part of the aesthetic experience.
