Thank you for bringing us into your writing process in this way, and for this study. Separately, I recently learned that there were groups of ppl enslaved in the states who later ended up in the Caribbean (some were loyalists to the Brits and fought for them in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812). So relation to Mr. Holden is not impossible!
This piece and your essay are both stunning, and thank you so much for leading me to this Morrison essay, which as a memoirist feels so necessary and true
I'm currently writing a book about theories of autobiography (among other things) and I hadn't realized she'd written so piercingly about this before... will also be looking for more of her nonfiction!
